WE ARE VERY PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THE RECIPIENT OF THE MAIDEN EDITION OF THE OLABISI FALOLA PHILOSOPHY SCHOLARSHIP!
The scholarship scheme was instituted to benefit young people graduating from the university who seek to pursue philosophy as an academic discipline, and advance the discipline in a variety of ways. For the 2018-2019 competition, only final year Philosophy students from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria were considered.
The scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates high academic achievement and promise in the discipline of philosophy. Two criteria were considered:
· Transcript of current GPA, no less than at the level of Second Class Upper division
· A five-page essay addressing the question: Is there a future for philosophy as a discipline in Nigeria?
The maiden winner is Oluwagbemisola Emmanuel Akinwande, a 400 level student of the Department of Philosophy, University of Ibadan, Nigeria.
According to the Scholarship Award Committee:
Oluwagbemisola Emmanuel Akinwande demonstrated a good grasp of the topic and was able to marshal his points. As the Committee’s preferred candidate for the award, Akinwande has several compelling arguments that speak to the subject of the debate. In the Committee’s opinion, given their current level of study, it is commendable that Akinwande was able to weave his arguments around his own experience and involvement as a philosophy student in Nigeria. Unlike others, Akinwande’s essay was clearly written, citing some relevant materials complete with references. In addition to this, he is more articulate and writes better than the other candidates. Oluwagbemisola Akinwande also scored more than the other candidates in the Committee’s simple but sophisticated tripartite composite award criteria.
