First and foremost, I wish to emphasize the value of knowledge beyond classroom walls. Numerous studies have shown that education transcends official instructions since values are first taught at home or in the community. For this reason, I would like to express my appreciation to North-West University, South Africa, for its immense contributions to African values, national development, and intercontinental growth. Undeniably, this institution is one of the few that prioritize formal and informal education. While teaching theories and concepts is one aspect of education, imparting life lessons through values and norms is another critical aspect. I feel fulfilled whenever I see an institution that passionately integrates these two elements because that is what education is truly about. Education liberates the mind from mental slavery.

Despite being a public university in South Africa, North-West University has undeniably rivaled several other private and public universities due to its flair for research and innovation. Moreover, the university has consistently remained committed to community development and innovation among its students. The institution is among the most competitive universities in the world, mainly due to its excellent facilities, passionate teaching, and exceptional research output. By merging two prominent institutions, North-West University was officially established in 2004. Ever since, the three-campus institution has developed into a renowned domestic and international institution.

North-West University distinguishes itself from its contemporaries through its commitment to social justice and the decolonization of the curriculum. This approach emphasizes equality and enables students to engage freely with diverse populations from Africa and beyond without fear. Decolonial studies offer a strategic framework for liberation through decolonial processes alongside a thorough analysis of the enduring consequences of colonialism in Africa. In higher education, the democratization of the curriculum promotes the growth of indigenous languages to make education more inclusive and accessible. It also highlights the historical prejudices of colonial domination, thereby fostering inclusiveness. What is the value of education if marginalized students do not learn to embrace their own cultures, tell their own stories, and live in their world?
A study by Hendri Coetzee and Werner Nell (2018) indicates that the quality and quantity of employable graduates produced annually by North-West University is commendable and significantly enhances the institution’s reputation. These authors agree that universities can serve as agents of change in their diverse communities by contributing to community-based projects and initiatives. To attest to their esteemed status, North West University is currently ranked 7th in Best Global Universities in South Africa and in the top 20 of the Best Global Universities in Africa, according to US News.

Aside from being highly committed to academic excellence and freedom, the institution prioritizes discipline among its students. I am exceedingly honored to receive this honorary award from an institution where the teachers are revered and regarded not only as instructors but also as custodians who instill in students the significance of values. The university also prepares students for their lives after graduation by innovatively incorporating vocational education, making them beneficial to themselves and society. This is evidenced by the university’s decision to impart theoretical knowledge related to their disciplines and practical skills to enhance employability in the labor market. By doing so, the university’s alum bodies will be regarded as active and valuable members of their respective societies.
Furthermore, it is no news that the world is evolving, and technology has dominated the planet. For this reason, North-West University recognizes the need to equip its students to mentally and critically observe this cultural shift while leveraging it to their benefit. The institution has effectively prepared its students for reasonable and sustainable engagement in vocational and entrepreneurial activities. These values ensure that they become value-oriented and value-driven graduates competent enough to actively address the challenges of the 21st century. The institution also equips students with the essential skills required in the job market, thus rendering them employable.

The students at North-West University have had the privilege to observe the institution’s steadfast dedication to academic excellence. The institution prioritizes cultivating intellectual curiosity and excellence through thought-provoking lectures that inspire intense discussions and impactful research initiatives that necessitate innovative thinking. The faculty’s dedication to teaching and mentorship is truly inspirational and is evidenced by their instructors, who painstakingly elucidate complex topics, provide insightful criticism, and foster the pursuit of students’ research interests and growth. Their proficiency and zeal have facilitated teaching and learning, enhancing students’ confidence and satisfaction. Research in health sciences, space exploration, and education at North-West University encourages students to produce innovative ideas and greatly support moral causes.

Over the years, the graduates of North-West University (NWU) have made outstanding contributions in various sectors around the world, and they have equally impacted society in several fields, including politics, governance, arts, entertainment, sports, academics, and research. North-West University alums have significantly shaped South Africa’s political scene. These graduates have also excelled in the cultural and entertainment fields. Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, Miss Universe for 2017, is an outstanding example of how the university can inspire confidence and competence. André Brink, another renowned alumnus of the university, poet, essayist, and novelist, has greatly enriched this institute’s work. Brink is essential to the South African literary landscape. Similarly, the athletic program at North-West University has produced several remarkable athletes. Among the well-known NWU alums representing South Africa and other nations in rugby and various sports are Caster Semenya, Johan Deysel, Cornell du Preez, Franco van der Merwe, Gerhard Mostert, and Warren Whiteley.

In conclusion, in many spheres—including academics and research—recent NWU graduates have made significant contributions. The former vice-chancellor of the University of Cape Town, Mamokgethi Phakeng, also an alumnus of the university, offers a benchmark for how other universities should develop academic leaders. Driven by North-West University’s commitment to educational excellence, Dr. Lerato Moekoena, another alumnus, is among the first Black women in South Africa to graduate with a PhD in Old Testament studies. I am happy to associate with this great university.
